  15. What is The X-Files?

  19.  Season Three started on BBC 1 on Thursday 12th September at 9.30pm,
  20. with the end-of-season-2 climax episode, Anasazi, aired a few days
  21. before on Monday 9th September. The BBC are now airing the third series
  22. out of sequence due to the graphic nature and vivid stories of the
  23. episodes (supposedly) on Wednesdays, at around 9.30pm. After Christmas,
  24. The X-Files will be re-scheduled to about 10pm (Wednesday/Thursday), and
  25. even then, the episodes may be censored. *sigh*

  29.  The X-Files is a one hour program on Sky, due to the insertion of
  30. adverts ;-)  Season 3 has been aired on Sky One, Tuesdays at 9pm,
  31. uncut!! (well, almost.) Season 4 will begin in February or March,
  32. 1997.Currently, Season 2 episodes are being repeated on Sky One, on
  33. Sundays at 8pm.

  35.  Sky will be broadcasting at Christmas two X-Files movies, the first
  36. being "Tooms" and "Squeeze", the second, "Deep Throat" and "The
  37. Erlenmeyer Flask".

  39.  The X-Files is produced by Ten Thirteen Productions for Twentieth
  40. Century Fox Television.

  44.  The X-Files is a television program that deals with, basically, the
  45. paranormal.  There are two main characters, Dana Scully (played by
  46. Gillian Anderson) and Fox Mulder (played by David Duchovny).  Both work
  47. for the FBI, in the Violent Crimes section.

  49.  Neither character is normally referred to by their forenames; they
  50. refer to each other as 'Scully' and 'Mulder'.
  51.  
  52.  The characters work from opposite viewpoints, Mulder being the believer
  53. and Scully being the dis-believer.  Scully was assigned to help Mulder
  54. with the X-Files and to debunk his theories.  She has been unable to do
  55. this with some of the cases.

  57.  The majority of The X-Files is filmed in Vancouver, British Columbia.

  59.  The X-Files is NOT based on true events or real FBI X Files.  The
  60. episodes are fiction, the plots loosely based on news reports of
  61. unexplained events around the world and other unexplained phenomena.The
  62. pilot does open with a note saying that the events were based on an
  63. actual real life story, but was not meant to imply that they are real X
  64. Files.

  68. Purpose of the newsgroup

  70.  The purpose of uk.media.tv.sf.x-files is to facilitate discussion about
  71. the television programme The X-Files from a UK perspective.It was
  72. created as the American groups contained spoiler information from
  73. episodes yet to be seen in the UK.

  77.  The subject of spoilers has aroused much debate in the news group.It
  78. generates such strong feelings that it was felt necessary to include a
  79. section in this FAQ outlining the majority view on the subject.

  81.  *  Absolutely no spoilers for episodes yet to be broadcast  in the UK
  82. to be posted. Any person breaking this is  likely to be soundly flamed.
  83. (This includes information  gained from attendance at conferences.)
  84.  *  Any discussion of an episode broadcast on Sky (satellite)  which has
  85. not been seen on the BBC, must have "spoiler  protection" - see below.
  86. This essentially means Season 2,  which has not been shown terrestrially
  87. yet.

  91.  Articles which require spoiler protection (see above), should observe
  92. the following guidelines.

  94.  The subject line should be of the form:
  95.  *SPOILER* E3.19 Hell Money Where "E3.19" is season 3, episode 19, and
  96. "Hell Money" is the name of the episode. The episode names and numbers
  97. are available elsewhere in this FAQ.

  99.  The body of the article should have a minimum of 25 lines of spoiler
  100. space (i.e. blank lines). If your software allows please also add a
  101. Ctrl-L character to this.

  103. General netiquette
  104.  
  105.  Here are some general guidelines on what is and is not generally
  106. considered acceptable practice in uk.media.tv.sf.x-files. Their intended
  107. purpose is not to hinder discussion but to enhance it.
  108.  
  109.  *  Do not post binaries.
  110.  
  111.  Users of most dial-up connections have to pay for the time they are
  112. on-line receiving news, so will not appreciate a large GIF deposited in
  113. their news base via their phone line.If you do have an image which you
  114. feel will enhance the lives of others, put it on an ftp site, so only
  115. those who want it need download it.

  117.  In addition to this, the news administrators at certain sites do not
  118. carry binary groups due to disk space requirements, so lots of people
  119. posting binaries is likely to get the group removed from some news
  120. sites, reducing propagation.

  122.  * Make sure your postings are word wrapped to around 72 columns at  
  123. most.
  124.  
  125.  Many users read news on 80 column screens (or 80 column fixed font
  126. windows in graphical interfaces) and so postings which exceed this and
  127. overflow each line are very unreadable and might not be read.
  128.  
  129.  Setting the width to 72 allows your article to be quoted and re-quoted
  130. without exceeding 80 columns.
  131.  
  132.  *  Keep your signature to reasonable proportions.
  133.  
  134.  The accepted Usenet limits are a maximum of 4 lines long, less than 80
  135. characters wide. This is for reasons of both bandwidth (cost to dial-up
  136. users) and courtesy to others (a 20 line ASCII art representation of the
  137. view from your living room may be impressive once, but needless to say 3
  138. or 4 viewings later it can become very tedious indeed).

  140.  *  Do not quote entire articles when following up.
  141.  
  142.  Please only quote enough of the article to give context to your reply.
  143. It is considered very bad practice to quote headers and/or signatures as
  144. there is no need for it - headers in particular are very boring things
  145. indeed.
  146.  *  Read your article before posting it.
  147.  
  148.  Make sure you take the time to re-read your words of wisdom before
  149. posting them, to check that it all makes sense and you aren't about to
  150. start a flame war...

  152.  * Please keep postings on-topic to The X-Files.

  154.  Please refrain from discussing your next door neighbour's cat or what
  155. your favourite flavour of ice cream is. There are places for such
  156. discussions but uk.media.tv.sf.x-files is not one of them.

  158.  *  Do not post private email without the author's permission

  160.  This is equivalent to broadcasting the contents of a private letter or
  161. phone call on national TV without authorization from the sender.

  163.  *  Do not post advertisements.

  165.  Only on-topic adverts *may* be considered acceptable, e.g.conventions
  166. with a X-Files element. Think very carefully      before submitting any
  167. sort of advert.

  169.  * Do not post test messages.

  171.  There are several groups specifically for test messages. Most will also
  172. generate email responses automatically from across the world to confirm
  173. article propagation. Three I know of are: demon.test, uk.test, and
  174. misc.test.

  176.  If you require further guidance on netiquette, you should take the
  177. newsgroup news.announce.newusers which is low traffic and moderated.
